Q: Do you burn your Step Four after Step Five?

Sometimes people burn their Step Four after Step Five as a symbolic act. I've not needed to do this. Do shred it, through, when the time comes, so that it is not read by anyone.

But do not burn it immediately after your Step Five. You will need the information for Steps Six through Nine.

If you do burn it, here's how to approach Steps Six to Nine.

Steps Six to Seven: get a list of character defects from your sponsor (there are a couple on this site) and pick the top twenty in your life, then write down a good example of each.

Steps Eight to Nine: the Step Four is a good starting point for identifying which relationships to examine and for capturing the bad behaviour that might necessitate amends. But Step Eight is a separate and new exercise, in any case, so sometimes people will simply reconsider each relationship from scratch and from a Step Eight angle rather than using the Step Four material as a starting point. If you've lost your Step Four, then simply follow the Step Eight instructions from scratch, making sure you scour your mind for any relationships that will require examination.
