Yes, but escape via an escape pod, and eject only when you're in the range of another spaceship's tractor beam. Don't just shoot yourself out of the airlock, or you'll freeze solid in about three minutes.

If the imagery isn't working for you:

Talk the situation through with an impartial person, and get a new sponsor ready and lined up to take you on and take you forward. Make sure the new sponsor is fully acquainted with the prior situation and has thoroughly quizzed you about why you think it didn't work out. Ensure you're totally clear it's the right thing. Starting with a new sponsor almost always puts a person back, as the new sponsor will usually restart the person at Step One, plus it takes a while to see through the (unconscious) tricks.
